A pair of bald eagles is nesting on the San Francisco Peninsula for the first time in nearly a century, a milestone for the once-endangered symbol of strength and grandeur. The nest is tucked deep in a fir tree on the far edge of northern Crystal Springs Reservoir -- hard for humans to see, but with a bird's-eye view of 7.15 million noisy neighbors.

I discovered this site last year and spent about 4 months mesmerized by this Bald Eagle family. Raptor Resource has a camera equipped with infra-red, so you can watch this nest in Decorah Iowa 24 hours a day. Last year, over the course of a week, Mama laid three eggs. We watched Dad bring her food or trade places with her while she left the nest. Then the babies started hatching (at around 35 days) and we watched Mom and Dad feed and tend them for months until they all fledged. Was an AMAZING experience. Well, folks, Mama laid this...
Philly booed Santa, but Santa still smiles

PHILADELPHIA -- The old suit fell apart around the same time the old man's body did. There have been a hundred stories written about Frank Olivo's Santa costume, and most of them, he said, have been inaccurate. It was not a frumpy suit; it cost $100, which was big money back in the 1960s. It lasted nearly 40 Christmases... [snip] Frank Olivo, the man who played Santa at a Philadelphia Eagles game on Dec. 15, 1968, remains a devoted Philly sports fan. Frank Olivo is a romantic, but most of all, he is a ham. That's why he used to...
Four INTs, Fred Jackson's 196 yards help Bills extend Eagles' nightmare (awww, poor Vick)

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Turns out the Buffalo Bills didn't need to actually contain quarterback Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. All they had to do was watch and wait for this so-called "Dream Team" to start unraveling all on its own. Graziano Juqua Parker shouldn't have jumped. Michael Vick's interceptions hurt. But Dan Graziano says it's all Andy Reid's fault in Philly. At first, the Bills were just a surprise winner. They've since morphed into a serious contender, writes James Walker. Running back Fred Jackson combined for 196 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, and linebacker Nick Barnett had...
Michael Vick exits with broken hand

PHILADELPHIA -- One week after suffering a concussion in a rough-and-tumble loss to the Falcons, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick broke his right hand on what he considered a late hit in Philadelphia's 29-16 loss to the rival New York Giants. The hit in question happened in the third quarter when Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty delivered a hard shot on Vick after the quarterback completed a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin. "I was trying to protect myself," Vick said in his postgame news conference. "Still didn't get a flag and that's pretty much been the story for the last three...
Michael Vick leaves with neck injury

ATLANTA -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has left the game against the Atlanta Falcons with a neck injury after being slammed into one of his own linemen late in the third quarter. After letting go of a pass Sunday night, Vick was spun around by an Atlanta defender and slammed into right tackle Todd Herremans. The quarterback got up slowly and wobbled to the sideline, where the trainers worked on his right shoulder and neck. He also appeared to spit out blood coming off the field. Mike Kafka took over for Vick and finished a touchdown drive that gave...

Federal officials investigate (six golden) eagle deaths at DWP wind farm

Federal authorities are investigating the deaths of at least six golden eagles at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Pine Tree Wind Project in the Tehachapi Mountains, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday. So far, no wind-energy company has been prosecuted by federal wildlife authorities in connection with the death of birds protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. A prosecution in the Pine Tree case could cause some rethinking and redesigning of this booming alternative energy source. Facilities elsewhere also have been under scrutiny, according to a...

Ugh. Let me repeat that. Ugh. Howard Eskin of WIP radio in Philly reports that the Eagles could sign quarterback Brett Favre as a backup to Mike Vick, after Kevin Kolb is shipped out of town. Sources told Eskin, who serves as a sideline reporter for the teams radio broadcasts, that its possible the Eagles will sign Favre. The move would reunite Favre with Andy Reid, who was an assistant with the Packers before becoming a head coach in 1999.

A bald eagle was killed by a train Thursday morning while enjoying breakfast on a stretch of tracks near Abderdeen, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Craig Koppie, an eagle coordinator with the federal agency, said the rare encounter happened in a flash. The bird was eating a deer carcass about 8:30 a.m. as an Amtrak train headed to Washington approached. An engineer spotted the bird and blasted his horn, but the eagle took off too slowly and was hit.

The Packers are going to have to do it on the road this year, in the playoffs, and they got a great start last Sunday night, beating the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field 21-16 on wild card weekend of the 2010 season. James Starks was the star on offense, with 123 yards rushing on 23 carries (5.3 yard average). Aaron Rodgers hit nine separate targets with his 123-rated passing, and the defense contained Michael Vick and the Eagles offense for an exciting and satisfying victory. Michael Vick Has Another Supporter: President Obama

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is having a phenomenal season, of course, but hes still a divisive figure. Some credit him for making the most of another chance following his prison sentence, while others still cant bring themselves to forgive Vick for the suffering he inflicted on innocent dogs. But according to information reported last night by Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Vick has at least one supporter in high places: President Barack Obama. Obama, it seems, is squarely in the credit Vick for making good on another chance camp. King said last night that Obama called Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie...

Freep a Poll! (was Gov. Rendell of Penn. right to call us a nation of wussies?)

Was Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell right to call us a nation of "wussies" after the Eagles-Vikings game was postponed because of the snowstorm? No, Rendell is a public official and should've been more concerned with safety Ignore him. Rendell's being a typically ornery Eagles fan. Rendell's comments were a larger statement about the world, and U.S. willingness to fight to keep our supremacy If the roads and public transportation were as clear as he said, there was no reason for the game to be held Yes. Seriously, when did the big, bad NFL start worrying about weather conditions?
The real reason Vick got a second chance (cause he's a jock)

The commentary about President Obama's call to the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles regarding that adjudicated dog killer Michael Vick has now reached an apogee of stupidity that strongly suggest that too many otherwise smart people have lost their ability to reason. Obama, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recounted, said, "'So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance.' He said, 'It's never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail.' And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance...
The Wimps Who Stole Christmas

In 1948, the Eagles won an NFL championship at Shibe Park in a raging blizzard, a game that was never forgotten by the 36,309 die-hards who didn't think twice about braving those conditions to watch history in the making. Then there was the "Snow-Plow" game in New England and the Pats' memorable playoff victory over Oakland in a snowstorm years later, and the frigid 1967 Ice Bowl in Green Bay. To paraphrase Frank Capra this Christmas season, for a true football fan it would not have been as wonderful a life had those remarkable games never been born. That's why...

Joy Tiz ©2010 The President of the United States took time out from his grueling party schedule to honor, not one of our brave troops, but a vicious animal abuser. Obama called Eagles owner, Jeff Lurie, to passionately gush his admiration for Michael Vick who served prison time for his dog fighting ring. But, this is not some backwater ignoramus staging fights in his back yard. Vick was all that and so much more. He tortured and killed helpless dogs. He used puppies as pit bull fighting bait. He mutilated animals who refused to fight. He slaughtered these helpless creatures...
