I seem to be having a problem with my Netgear Router. It is over 3 years old and was given to me by a friend. Anyway, not problems with it UNTIL today. My wife's computer in the other room won't receive the signal. I switched computers and mine won't receive the signal either so the problem isn't her computer. Also her computer was picking up signals from other wireless sources in the neighborhood. While my computer is attached by wire to the router it works fine even when I switch to wireless. But when not attached directly it doesn't pick...
How to boost your WiFi signal with a beer can (with Photos! you boozehounds)

I love a good hack, especially one that requires me to throw back a cold one before hand (or during). This simple wifi boost has actually been shown to increase signal strength by at least 2 to 4 bars. And, well, I will drink to that. These instructions came to me via The Chive and i think they are most definitely worth checking out. But here is the most important question: what kind of beer will you use? For this project you are going to need scissors, a utility knife, some adhesive putty and an empty beer can. More than...

One visit to a booby-trapped website could direct attackers to a person's home, a security expert has shown. The attack, thought up by hacker Samy Kamkar, exploits shortcomings in many routers to find out a key identification number. It uses this number and widely available net tools to find out where a router is located. Demonstrating the attack, Mr Kamkar located one router to within nine metres of its real world position.
"Millions" Of Home Routers Vulnerable To Web Hack

The upcoming Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas offers an annual parade of security researchers revealing new ways to break various elements of the Internet. But few of the talks have titles quite as alarming as one on this year's schedule: "How to Hack Millions of Routers."Craig Heffner, a researcher with Maryland-based security consultancy Seismic, plans to release a software tool at the conference later this month that he says could be used on about half the existing models of home routers, including most Linksys, Dell, and Verizon Fios or DSL versions. Users who connect to the Internet through...

I have an old WRT54G wireless Linksys Router. All my computers go through this to connect to the net. I have access restriction turned on with a list of the MAC addresses of my 5 computers and IP range. Do I need NAT checked and does this add any extra security? At least 2 computers are being used at anytime by us. 3 use XP and the other 2 us W7. All have the Comodo Firewall.
Space-based router promises more reliable communications

The first IP router on a commercial satellite has successfully passed its in-orbit test, moving the military and commercial customers closer to an era of faster satellite communications. The Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) technology is expected to reduce latency and increase efficiency, said Steven Boutelle, vice president of Cisco Global Government Solutions Group. Boutelle, who served as the U.S. Armys chief information officer prior to joining Cisco, said IRIS can route data to multiple ground receivers in a single step, eliminating the need to double-hop to a teleport, reducing latency and increasing transponder utilization. The router and modem software...

My router / ethernet switch stopped working last night

My router / ethernet switch stopped working last night. How do I fix it? I was surfing the web last night when all of a sudden I couldn't reload several web pages. I restarted the cable modem, but that didn't fix the problem. I then noticed that the network icon had an "X" on it. The diagnostic program suggested I might have an unplugged network cable. I checked another computer on the network, and it wasn't connected either. I then tested the internet connection by connecting the cable modem directly to the computer, and it worked.
A Radical New Router

The Internet is broken. I should know: I designed it. In 1967, I wrote the first plan for the ancestor of todays Internet, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, or ARPANET, and then led the team that designed and built it. The main idea was to share the available network infrastructure by sending data as small, independent packets, which, though they might arrive at different times, would still generally make it to their destinations. The small computers that directed the data trafficI called them Interface Message Processors, or IMPsevolved into todays routers, and for a long time theyve kept up...

Hello Freepers, This is a vanity. I was asked to set up a wireless N wireless home office router that can be used with a soon to be bought/built media server or network storage device. I have no experience with Wireless N, nor with home media servers. So I have a two part question: 1. What is the best router out there for the price? The home will have 2 wired PCs, a wireless printer, some WiFi/bluetooth PDAs, and several laptops. 2. There is also an old P4 conroe PC that I can use as a media server, but only...

RSA Conference: Web Page Can Take Over Your Router

Excerpt - Researcher Dan Kaminsky tomorrow will show attendees of the RSA security conference how a Web-based attack could be used to seize control of certain routers. Kaminsky has spent the past year studying how design flaws in the way that browsers work with the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS) can be abused in order to get attackers behind the firewall. But at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, he will demonstrate how this attack would work on widely used routers, including those made by Cisco's Linksys division and D-Link. The technique, called a DNS rebinding attack, would work on...

| Brother Freepers, after eight years online at home (joined this place about the same time), all on dial-up, we're finally getting into the 21st century and going broadband with cable Internet.I got a great online deal which includes a discounted rate for six months, free (after rebates) modem and router and cash back. The modem and router arrived in only two days, and Comcast is supposed to be out on Wednesday to set this up. I'm pretty sure it's Bush's fault. I hope I got everything out of the way, but I'm sure if I didn't, it will be pointed out in a bold, 24 point font. CA: S.J. to save millions with Nortel contract (Cisco out, Nortel in at new Civic Center)

San Jose will save millions of dollars, getting a substantially more robust computer network at a lower cost after city leaders were forced to fairly bid a contract that had improperly favored Cisco Systems in the new City Hall. The city council in August was forced to rip up and start over with the $8 million contract after a Mercury News investigation exposed apparent favoritism toward the company and a subsequent city audit revealed San Jose had gone so far as to let the company write the list of 18,000 Cisco parts the city would buy. The new low bidder,...
